My grandmother, Violet White Fitzpatrick, was one of the most
well-loved, gifted, old-fashioned and loving people around. She was a
simple Southern wife and mom who grew roots in her community and
contributed so very much to the lives around her. She was kind, tough,
proactive, hard-working and very "Mayberry." She was a fine Christian
woman, a professional seamstress, musician, a famous cook and baker and a
mother hen to everyone who knew her. Her social connectedness, grit and
ability to do or make absolutely anything is the total opposite of the
helpless, social brokenness of today and I seek to be like her.
Violets
are small and unassuming. They don't have much fragrance, but their
hardiest part is green and fresh and shaped like the love that my
grandmother represented. They can grow almost anywhere, but aren't fancy
or "worth much," so you can't usually buy them at a nursery. They're
easy to satisfy and they don't invade other people's space. They're
happy and determined and contribute much without taking much in return.
So this blog will be a sharing of good food, family, Christian living and loving, and, hopefully, down-home common sense.
Melanie
